On first examination, this is in some ways a compulsive book – as once picked up the reader will find more and more fascinating entries and will get involved in cross-referencing to other species listed as being associated! It is large and weighty in all senses, but encourages one to dip in further. The author has clearly invested many, many hours, days, months and years in this project, which began, we are told, with his intention to compile, for his personal satisfaction, a list of all known mineral species from Britain and Ireland, spurred on later by the realization that since the publication in 1858 of Greg and Lettsom’s Manual of the mineralogy of Great Britain and Ireland, an up-to-date listing was long overdue.
The mineralogical community now owes a debt of gratitude to him for the very detailed work in which the original scheme was expanded in such a way as to present this very detailed account of all the minerals in Britain and Ireland, including the offshore islands and even Rockall in the coverage. An enormous amount of effort was surely entailed in chasing up obscure references and sifting through hundreds of publications from both home and abroad which have yielded further data. The author has indeed been fortunate in obtaining willing cooperation from both amateur and professional mineralogists and mineral collectors (as well as expert mineral photographers). It is recorded that the book is 100% longer and 50% later than originally planned, but it is at last published and Andy Tindle is to be congratulated on giving us this useful and very comprehensive compendium. This, the very long awaited reference work, that is a complete coverage of the minerals and their localities in Britain and Ireland. All of us within the mineralogical community have been waiting for a great many years for such a book to be published covering the British Islands, and here it is. It certainly has been worth the long wait and what an emotional surprise it is. The book is simply one of the best topographical mineralogical books to be published in recent years. All serious collectors of minerals will need to add this important mineralogical reference work to their libraries. It includes over one thousand confirmed mineral species from the above area with a total of over 2200 minerals listed. It is also illustrated with over 550 colour and black and white images of gorgeous specimens from many private and institutional collections. The photography is stunning with a lovely balance of of both common and rare minerals. The mixture of specimen photography together with thin sections and great scanning electron images is most attractive. This is a worthy successor to that famous work Manual of the mineralogy of Britain and Ireland by Greg & Lettsom (1858) that has been used by so many collectors. Anybody that collects British minerals will require this reference for their collections with literally hundreds of localities mentioned. Six maps are included showing the distribution of the main mineralogical areas, ore fields and type localities. Also present, are tables of British type localities and their derivations as well as a section on significant museum collections holding mineralogical material. The book concludes with an extensive 50 page detailed bibliography. It will become the standard text to our rich mineralogical diversity for numerous decades to come. The author Andy Tindle, deserves all our greatest thanks for putting this massive project together and publishing it. Personally it is very satisfying to see 14 images from my own mineral collection incorporated within this fantastic book. The book should sell very well and you should treat yourself to a copy. The long-awaited Minerals of Britain and Ireland has arrived and has raised the bar for future topographical mineralogies to an almost impossible new height. This amazingly detailed and thorough work is written by Andrew Tindle, senior project officer in the Department of Earth Sciences, Open University and author of more than ninety scientific papers including many on mineralogy. He has been able to personally examine and verify or correct the identification of many species described in the book through his professional association with the Open University, the collector community, and important museums. Tindle’s masterpiece replaces for all time the often-referenced though quite out-of-date Manual of the Mineralogy of Great Britain and Ireland by Greg and Lettsom (1858), adding more than nine hundred new species to those described therein.

The book opens with a short preface and sections with acknowledgments and abbreviations. These are followed by an introduction that in itself is worth the price of admission. It begins with a thoughtful preamble and a discussion of sources of uncertainty and errors. Next are wonderful sections describing the geologic environments of Britain and Ireland and their many important mining districts; good maps are provided that relate type localities to these features. The introductory sections close with information concerning mineral societies and field collecting. There is a closing sidebar that discusses IMA-CNMNC nomenclature changes first reported in Fleischer’s Glossary of Mineral Species 2008 (Back and Mandarino) and how these relate to names used in the descriptive sections of the new book.

The bulk of the book, some 533 pages, contains the alphabetically arranged descriptions of the minerals known to exist in Britain and Ireland, more than twenty-two hundred of them. Each description begins with the species name, followed by its crystal system and formula. No other physical or chemical data are routinely given, and the reader is quite reasonably expected to have other general references available for such information. Descriptions of the mineral’s occurrences follow and include site-specific characteristics such as crystal size, development, and color, as appropriate, and selected information on the geologic environment and history of the locale. Great attention has been given to detail, thoroughness, and species confirmation. Many locality descriptions have been gleaned from the more than three thousand different cited references. Most of these are formal publications, as would be expected, but data derived from other important sources such as mineral exploration programs are woven throughout. Many descriptions are accompanied by a photograph of the mineral. These approximately 550 illustrations vary considerably, from color photographs of cabinet- to micromount-sized specimens and even electron photomicrographs when appropriate. The quality of these illustrations is uniformly good; many were taken by well-known mineral collector Mick Cooper.

The book closes with two appendices, a glossary, and the 50-page reference bibliography mentioned above. The appendices are particularly interesting. The first consists of a group of nine tables that include information on species named after British or Irish citizens, species named after British or Irish locations, similar information for discredited species, species named after British or Irish citizens but not found or confirmed in Britain or Ireland, and so forth. The second appendix contains a complete review of museum collections in Britain and Ireland.

It is likely that the only persons who will ever read each sentence of this daunting work will be Tindle himself and those persons tasked with editing it. However, one needs only to spend a few hours reading random descriptions to realize that there are almost no editorial glitches, that the command of the published and related literature required to write them would be impossible for most mineralogists, and that the attention to detail is almost painful; such a work will not soon appear for another similar geologically and mineralogically diverse area, if ever. This is clearly the best topographical mineralogy available and, although expensive, should have a reserved spot on every serious collector’s bookshelf.

Minerals of Britain and Ireland is a completely comprehensive treatment of the minerals found in Britain, Ireland and the surrounding islands. Beautifully illustrated throughout with 500 colour and black and white images, the book provides exhaustive coverage of the remarkably wide range of minerals found in this part of the world.

By far the largest part of the book is the alphabetical listing of all the minerals described from Britain and Ireland. This includes species, varieties, synonyms, discredited minerals and fraudulent descriptions. The status of each mineral is clearly represented by distinctive formatting. All type localities are also described. The treatment is also enriched with biographical information on all those individuals who have had minerals named after them; it describes all the major mineral collections in national and local museums and university departments; and it summarizes the geological conditions in the major orefields that produced so many of the minerals.

Minerals of Britain and Ireland is replete with bibliographical references and it describes many additional discoveries never previously published. Coverage includes all relevant articles from national mineralogical organizations such as the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland (from 1876) and the Russell Society (from 1982). Journals such as the UK Journal of Mines and Minerals, Mineralogical Record and Mineral Realm are referred to extensively, as are many geological journals with mineralogical content.

The last time a book of this type was attempted was 150 years ago, long before modern analytical instrumentation had been developed. Over 900 additional species new to Britain or Ireland have been described since that time. Minerals of Britain and Ireland covers in considerable detail the period 1858 to 2006, with particular emphasis on the last 50 years. In total, over 2200 minerals are listed, including over a thousand confirmed species.

This monumental work will be warmly welcomed by the community of mineral collectors, curators, dealers, students and research scientists. Furthermore, archaeologists, environmentalists, mining historians, libraries, national heritage organizations and government agencies will also find much of value in this eagerly anticipated major work

 

Andrew Tindle joined the Open University in 1976. He was awarded a PhD in 1982 for work on the Loch Doon granite complex, Scotland. He is now Senior Project Officer in the Department of Earth Sciences, where he manages the electron microprobe facility. He has published over 90 scientific papers on a wide range of subjects, including many related to mineralization in Britain and Ireland. He is also the co-author of two geo-analytical reference books.
